Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun hosted the 4th advisory meeting on revitalization of the domestic tourism industry Dec. 26 in Taipei City.

Tourism enhances economy and raises the international profile of the country, Cheng said. This is evidenced by recognition such as that from Netherlands-based Green Destinations Foundation for six scenic areas, reported by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications Tourism Administration.

Cheng noted that there were over seven million international visitors between January and November this year, up 9.64 percent from last year. She added that there has been growth in the number of passengers from America, Australia, Europe, New Zealand, Northeast and Southeast Asia.

The TA is devising sustainable tourism initiatives including those for concerts, cultural events and ecotourism, Cheng said. She added that a tourism research and training institute will be inaugurated next year to strengthen international marketing and policy making.

The TA also convened an interministerial meeting the same day to discuss two projects promoting southern and eastern Taiwan as destinations, attended by officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Culture and Ministry of the Interior, as well as industry advisors. (POC-E)
